Empowering Young
Black Girls
Sparkle Mentoring Program was founded from a deeply personal place—rooted in both lived experience and a desire to create something I once needed myself. In 2008, as I listened to my daughter and nieces navigate conversations about friendships, relationships, and self-image, I realized how much they needed a safe, nonjudgmental space to be heard, guided, and supported. In that moment, the vision for Sparkle became clear: to create an environment where girls could grow with confidence, clarity, and truth.
Growing up in a single-parent household after the loss of my father at a young age, I often struggled with shyness, self-doubt, and finding my voice. I didn’t have access to mentorship or the kind of guidance that nurtures self-worth and purpose. Those experiences shaped my understanding of how critical it is for young girls to feel seen, supported, and empowered early in life. Sparkle was created to fill that gap—to provide the encouragement, mentorship, and safe space that so many girls need but often do not receive.
Adolescence is a pivotal stage, especially for girls ages 10 to 18 who are navigating identity, peer pressure, and increasing societal influence. I saw firsthand how many young girls were comparing themselves to others, influenced by media, and struggling to recognize their own uniqueness and value. Too often, they were left to figure things out on their own without the tools or support systems needed to make healthy, confident decisions. Sparkle exists to change that narrative.
At its core, Sparkle Mentoring Program is about more than mentorship—it is about transformation. We focus on building self-esteem, confidence, leadership, and self-awareness, because personal development is just as essential as academic success. When a girl understands her worth, finds her voice, and learns how to advocate for herself, she is better equipped to navigate life’s challenges and pursue her goals with purpose.
What makes Sparkle unique is our commitment to the whole girl and the whole family. We recognize that true impact requires understanding the broader environment in which each girl lives. Through intentional support, including family engagement and access to community resources, we meet girls where they are and walk alongside them on their journey.
The name “Sparkle” represents our belief that every girl has the ability to shine brightly and perform brilliantly in her own life. Our goal is to help each girl discover that inner light and give her the tools to let it shine unapologetically.
Through Sparkle, I hope every girl feels empowered, supported, and capable of overcoming any obstacle. I want her to know she is loved, valued, and important—and that her voice matters. I want her to leave knowing that with belief, effort, and support, she can become anything she chooses to be.
The transformation we strive to see is powerful: a shy girl finding her voice, a doubtful girl becoming confident and bold, and a hesitant girl opening herself to growth and new possibilities. When these young women begin to walk in strength, purpose, and courage—when they believe in themselves despite where they started—that is the impact Sparkle was created to achieve.
This work is deeply personal to me because I see myself in every girl we serve. Sparkle exists to ensure that no girl has to navigate her journey alone. It exists to nurture confidence, build resilience, and inspire a generation of young women who not only believe in their potential but use it to uplift their communities.
If there is one message I hope every Sparkle girl carries with her, it is this:
You have the power within you to define who you are and who you will become. Never let anyone else decide that for you.
